Predicting Lottery Results: Fundamental Errors in Statistical Concepts

The lottery is a popular game of chance and there are lots of them around the world. Typically, these lotteries are government-run or government-sanctioned and gives ordinary people a chance at winning large amounts of money.

With millions of players worldwide, there are a lot of diverse theories at winning the lottery. But before anyone goes off and explains how to win, I’d like to explain something more fundamental than the odds of winning: these are not numbers we are dealing with, but balls with numbers. That small difference is important to consider before going to the statistics of predicting anything.

What You See Is What You Get

A lottery is a draw of numbered balls, you can view it on TV, and on the internet as well. The balls are numbered to differentiate them from one another. If the balls weren’t numbered, but used letters or other symbols, the lottery would still be the same. The analogy here is like Sudoko. Sudoko is not a math puzzle, but a logic puzzle. If you change the numbers 1 to 9 with the letters A to J, you can still have the same rules, complexity and method of solving the puzzle.

Same with the lottery. For instance, if you have a lottery with 26 balls, and instead of the numbers 1 to 26, you had the letters A to Z instead, you would still have the same lottery. Of course, the results would be announced as “B-D-J-R-T-Y” instead of “2-4-10-18-20-25″ but there would be no real difference in mechanics, rules, and winning combinations.

What Does That Mean?

This means that if the analysis method used is purely mathematical or limited to what’s called “quantitative statistics”, the resulting analysis will be wrong. Taking the mean or numerical average of the draw results don’t mean anything (pun intended).

For a more meaningful results analysis (and prediction), “qualitative statistics has to be used as well. This is not to say that quantitative statistics is not needed here. On the contrary, both will be used together. But that would be explained in another article.

Streaks and Runs

Any fan of a team would be familiar with a winning (or losing) streak. A streak is where an event repeats itself in consecutive sequences. In qualitative statistics, this is also called a run. And in lotteries, a number’s run is a significant event.

If a number repeats in consecutive draws, there’s a big chance of it coming up in the next two draws. There’s a mathematical reason for this, but it involves proof using topology, and that takes some bending imagination to grasp. Suffice to say, that a lottery draw can be simulated, and the you can check out the results on your own. You can also check out historical data (previous draws) and prove it yourself.

Event Frequency

As a game of random numbers, lottery results can be tabulated and the frequency of a number being drawn can be counted. This is called the frequency.

To get a meaningful frequency, you can use all the draws from the very beginning of the lottery, or for the year, or the past few years. As long as there’s enough data, maybe 32 draws, or 40, or 50 draws, the resulting graph will be a bell curve. This is the shape of the frequency distribution for any random event. And it doesn’t matter if the balls are marked by numbers or by letters.

Any analysis of the lottery results will be incomplete if it only takes into account the numbers drawn. There are more things significant about the numbers. And there are a lot of things which can be drawn out from the results. It’s true that a random event, like the lottery is not predictable. That is, the result cannot be predicted a hundred percent. However, there are ways of predicting the most possible outcome. And it involves more than just placing bets on a set of numbers with a fixed range of totals.
