Article by John E Rhoades

Congratulations you finally joined the ereader community, and now you need books for Kindle. But you want to avoid a large monthly expense for your books for Kindle purchases. What are your options? Well believe it or not, you can actually get free or discounted books for Kindle. Below I have listed 5 suggestions for doing just that.

Amazon Discussion Board

One of the most obvious ways is to go to the source. Check out Amazon’s discussion board for Kindle. You can see it here ==> amazon.com/tag/kindle/forum. This is a great place to find free new books and new authors. But you have to check this out often as some of these books are only offered free for a few hours or a day.

Borrowing

Starting in January of 2011 Amazon now allows books to be lent from one Kindle to another for no charge. The loan period is for 2 weeks, during which the original owner will not be able to access the loaned ebook on their Kindle.

Jungle-Search

Jungle-Search.com is used to search all of Amazon’s products. You can use Jungle-Search to look for books for Kindle and sort them by price. This will allow you to find free as well as discounted Kindle ebooks.

Free ebook Websites

There are also various websites that are great sources for free books for Kindle. Some of the more popular sites are listed below.

www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/digital-text – Amazon’s free bestsellers.

manybooks.net – Manybooks’ motto is ‘the best ebooks at the best price: free!’, and this site has a huge categorized list.

Kindle ePub Converter

There are many free ebooks on the internet in ePub format, Google Books for example, but Kindle does not support the ePub format. No worries, there is a free ebook library management software called Calibre. It is easy to download and is a simple drag and drop process to convert an ePub ebook into Kindle format. You can get this software at calibre-ebook.com.

Cheaper Kindle vs Nook – A New Option, Can You Handle It

Article by John E Rhoades

There is heightened competition in the Kindle vs Nook war. Amazon just announced a new version of its Kindle e-book reader. It will be discounted by , but will feature ads and daily deals, delivered via WiFi. Is this going to be another plus in the Kindle vs Nook battle or will this test the willingness of e-book users to put up with advertising?

Amazon is calling this edition Kindle with Special Offers, which will be available on May 3. Special offers and sponsored screen savers display on the Kindle screen saver and on the bottom of the home screen, they do not interrupt reading in any way.Since the ads and offers are delivered via WiFi, it appears that by turning off WiFi the ads could be avoided. But this would also eliminate the offers, which would have value.

Some examples of initial offers that would be available include a Amazon gift card for , for an album from the Amazon MP3 store, and worth of merchandise from either the Amazon Denim Shop or Swim Shop for . Apparently, these initial deals will be exclusive to the Kindle with Special Offers. But that may change as Amazon brings on new advertisers.Amazon has also said it’s introducing an app called AdMash. Admash, which is free, is going to allow Kindle with Special Offers customers to help choose future (ad-related) screen savers. Users will be able to specify their screen saver preferences so they only see the images they like the most. For example, you could choose to have screen saver types of landscapes and scenery, travel images, architecture or photography.

Only time will tell how successful Kindle with Special Offers will be and if it will be another deciding factor in the Kindle vs Nook competition. Amazon seems very sensitive to not interfering with the reading experience and has said that ads would display across the bottom of the screen and on the Kindle’s screen saver, but not while the user was reading a Kindle book. The appeal of the offers will be a success factor as well as the acceptance of would be buyers to advertising.

It is also important to note that Amazon is not replacing the WiFi only Kindle, Kindle with Special Offers is just a cheaper option.

Potential buyers should still check out Kindle vs Nook reviews to determine the best e-book reader option.

Kindle Vs Nook – 7 Key Features For Comparison

Kindle Vs Nook – 7 Key Features For Comparison

Article by John E Rhoades

Kindle vs Nook – what makes one better than the other? As e-readers become more and more popular it is important to contrast and compare the main feature points so you can make an informed purchase decision. Currently, the most famous brands in the e-reader market include Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes and Noble’s Nook. I’ll use these 2 brands to discuss e-reader features that are important for comparison.

About a year ago Kindle vs Nook was a little more one sided. Nook was first generation while Kindle was on it’s second version. Technology has advanced as you would expect. Amazon has released Kindle 3, the latest release of Nook is Nook 2 and Barnes and Noble has recently updated it’s software as well. Both e-readers have improved and added features. Below are 7 key areas, using Kindle vs Nook, you should keep in mind before making a purchase decision.

1. Speed. Overall Kindle is faster than Nook. Kindle turns on faster, the pages turn quicker, the downloads are faster and the syncing is quicker. Nook’s touchscreen is not very responsive and sometimes you need to tap it a couple of times to respond or just to wake it up from sleep mode. 2. Screen. Kindle has a no back lit screen that reduces eye strain, is better for readability and can also be read in the sunlight. In addition, Kindle’s ‘e-ink electronic paper’ display makes the text come across as if you are reading it on real paper. One minor Kindle vs Nook comparison is that Kindle has a less reflective surface with more of a matte finish, while the Nook has a shiny finish that can be bothersome with reflections.

3. Navigation. The Nook has a touch screen navigation menu, while the Kindle uses push button technology and fixed keyboard for navigating text and titles. Both use push button page turning. The touch screen of the Nook is popular, but it makes the Nook slightly slower and contributes to the shorter battery life compared to the Kindle.

4. Other Media. Both the Nook and Kindle allow you to put PDF’s and other types of files on the device and you can listen to music on both while reading.

5. Wi-Fi. The Nook has free Wi-Fi in AT&T hotspots and Barnes and Noble stores. The Kindle connects free to AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots, as well as other free Wi-Fi hotspots. The Kindle works wirelessly across 100 countries and territories in the world.

6. Sharing. Starting in January 2011, Amazon is now allowing the sharing of Kindle ebooks for up to two weeks between Kindle owners, or people with the Kindle app. The Nook has always allowed sharing of titles for up to 2 weeks between Nook and Nook app users.

7. Battery Life. Kindle has much longer battery life than Nook. Keeping wireless on shortens battery life for both, but Kindle has longer life in both modes.
