For example, The fast kick drum gave me a really good idea for a beat I made. The beat was in half time but I would sprinkle these fast little kick drum flurries that make the thing move in a really interesting way rhythmically. Also I like some of the actual kick sounds I find in certain punk tracks. They are usually very tight slappy sounding kick drums. This is not how I usually want my main kicks to sound, but I have used that tight punk sound as a quiet “echo” type sound after a deep kick hit.

2.)Jazz music is another genre I like to listen to for beat ideas. In most Jazz recordings (the old ones at least) the drums were never very loud. This makes me really listen to the tracks in order to hear the drums. I find the drumming in lots of jazz music is insane! The time signatures and rhythm patterns are very complicated and technical. I use some of these ideals sometimes when making my own beats. I can put a kick where a snare should be, throw a ¾ time signature in a 4/4 beat, or just get crazy with some weird phrasing. Also in jazz you will find some very cool bass lines you can emulate with your own beats.

3.) Who could ever forget rock music? This is where I get tons of ideas. Listen to the snare drum sounds on hit rock sounds, really listen. These snares are huge sounding. These bands spend lots of money on their drum sounds. I like hearing a snare sound, and then trying to copy it with my own drums by adding reverb or EQing it, etc. The bass sounds on hit rock songs are also very well produced. You can sample one bass note, change it up in your software, and spit out a brand new interesting bass sound to add to your beats.
