Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by the pea-sized pineal gland situated just above the middle of the brain and, when released into the bloodstream, melatonin induces a state or tiredness and helps you to both fall asleep and to enjoy a deep level of sleep.

The key to the release of melatonin is light which switches the body’s natural internal clock on and off. When light enters the eye it stimulates the retina and excites a nerve pathway between the eye and an area of the brain known as the hypothalamus. Within the hypothalamus a second area, known as the supra-chiasmatic nucleus (SCN), in turn sends signals to other areas of the body which control the body’s temperature and other things that either make you feel tired or wide awake.

In the case of the pineal gland light causes the SCN to switch off the production of melatonin, while darkness switches the pineal gland on and melatonin is released into the bloodstream. It is the fact that the release of melatonin is triggered by the arrival of darkness that results in it sometimes being referred to as the “Dracula of hormones”.

One important point to note here is the importance of light to the production of melatonin. We often talk about a shift in the body’s internal clock, perhaps through changes in work patterns, but it is not the shift in the clock that upsets the production of melatonin. The pineal gland will only be switched on in darkness and even relatively low levels of artificial indoor lighting are enough to switch off the release of melatonin into the bloodstream.

When you travel across several world time zones your internal body clock is no longer in sync with local time and you find that you are wide awake when everybody else is sound asleep. It has been suggested therefore that one way to help to gradually bring your internal clock back into sync is to use melatonin to induce sleep at a time when the pineal gland would not normally be producing it.

This is certainly not a bad idea and many people do indeed report that taking melatonin has proved helpful. There are however two things that you need to bear in mind before reaching for melatonin as a magic jet lag remedy.

The first is that there are many factors which affect the body’s ability to sleep and melatonin is only one small part of a complex sleep wake cycle. Melatonin alone will not therefore produce very good results and it needs to be used as just one part of an overall plan to combat jet lag.

The second is that melatonin is the only hormone which is available without prescription and this lack of regulation in its production and use can present problems.

Because melatonin occurs naturally in some foods it may be sold as a dietary supplement, alongside vitamins and minerals, and is available in many health food stores. As a result melatonin is also manufactured in synthetic form but there is little or no regulation of the factories in which production takes place or indeed of the amount of melatonin contained in the tablets which you purchase. This often means that the quantity of melatonin contained in a pill and that stated on the packaging are not always the same.

Commercially available melatonin is often sold in tablets which contain far higher levels than are found naturally in the body and indeed, in many cases, levels can be as much as twenty times natural blood levels. In addition, there is no requirement to list side-effects when selling melatonin as a supplement and these can be significant. Apart from causing fatigue and depression in some users, melatonin can also cause raised blood pressure and even affect fertility.

Many people do find that melatonin is helpful as a jet lag remedy but, if you do decide to use it, then you should purchase it only from reputable outlets, use it in very small doses and take it as just one part of a wider plan to prevent or combat jet lag.

Can melatonin perform all these wondrous feats? Melatonin has a direct effect on sleep, certainly, but most of the other benefits are due to Serotonin, from which melatonin is formed.

Should we be taking melatonin supplements then? No Most people already have sufficient melatonin in their bodies.

Melatonin is a hormone that is manufactured by a small gland located near in the centre of the brain called the pineal gland. One of the major functions of melatonin is to control the “circadian rhythm” that 24 hour body clock that controls when we feel sleepy among other things. This is because melatonin release is stimulated by darkness and suppressed by strong light. And this is where the problems lie for some of us.

Shift workers in particular have a raw deal here. They have to sleep during the day when melatonin levels are low and have to wake up and work at night, they are virtually working against their natural circadian rhythms.

Frequent travellers have a similar problem. Changing time zones often can completely confuse the body clock and can have a chronic effect on sleep patterns.Women going through menopause can experience hormonal fluctuation and hence a messed up body clock (I speak here from personal experience!) Elderly people may be lacking in melatonin as the production of this hormone decreases with age.

Even just having the light on at night can affect melatonin release. Our ancestors used to go to bed when darkness fell and wake up with the sunrise, it’s a safe bet those guys never suffered with insomnia!

How do you know when your body clock is our of whack?

Simple, you’ll take ages to wake up in the morning and you won’t feel sleepy at night. You’ll probably feel half alive during the day too waking up properly when it’s bed time!

Can we reset our body clocks by taking melatonin?

Some people have had good results by taking melatonin directly, others have noticed no benefit whatsoever (including me!) If you’re an older person or a shift worker, melatonin may be the way to go. For younger people I would say probably not,(there’s no harm in trying it however)

If you’re thinking of taking melatonin, start with a low dose (1 mg) and work up to 3 mg. If this doesn’t work it probably means lack of melatonin isn’t the problem and you’re better off trying something else.The main problem with melatonin is that no on can tell us what the ideal dose is. There are tests going on now, but long term results are unknown as are effects on pregnant women.

And if you’re thinking of adding to your family soon, give melatonin a miss as it can act as a mild contraceptive.

What’s better than taking melatonin?

A better way to go would be to stimulate melatonin release naturally by eating tryptophan rich foods (turkey, bananas, milk, eggs…) These form serotonin in the body. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter and a precursor for melatonin. For melatonin production to work properly, serotonin must be present.

This is how it works: tryptophan forms serotonin which converts to melatonin. Tryptophan is freely available in certain countries and on prescription in others. This can be an option if you can’t eat dairy or are a vegetarian.

Another great way to stimulate melatonin levels is to get enough sunlight during the day, especially in the morning. For locations without a lot of natural daylight, or for shift workers, lighboxes may be purchased. This is a most effective way to ensure your body clock is properly set.

In conclusion melatonin is very necessary for our well being, but direct supplementation doesn’t work for many. If you suspect your melatonin levels are low, consult a sleep specialist or try the suggestions in this article.

The most accepted function of Melatonin is it role in sleep regulation. Melatonin supplements help induce sleep in people with disrupted circadian rhythms. Melatonin is significantly more effective in decreasing the amount of time required to fall asleep, increasing the number of sleeping hours, and boosting daytime alertness.

Melatonin is purported to be one of those miracle substances that has a hand in everything. Many parents report that their children, who may be only five or six years old, are wide awake until 11 pm or later.

Melatonin may be able to help these children. Since it is the primary chemical in the body that helps to induce sleep, children who suffer from insomnia often find that Melatonin restores their normal sleep cycle and helps them to be more awake and alert during the day.

How to Take It

There are currently no guidelines as to how to take Melatonin. Dosage seems to be a very personal thing. Some people are very sensitive to small doses of Melatonin while others need a much higher dose. The best approach for any condition is to begin with very low doses and slowly add more until you get the effect that you are seeking.

The starting dose of Melatonin in children is about 0.3 mg/day or less. Although current research suggests that even doses as high as 10 mg are perfectly safe, it is best to proceed with caution.

In adults, 3 mg is usually a safe starting dose and you can increase it or decrease it as you see fit. Availability

Melatonin is readily available in most health food stores in the United States and it is very cheap. In Europe it is a controlled substance. Most Europeans who wish to use Melatonin find it cheaper and easier to have it shipped from the US.

Adverse Effects

Melatonin is one of the least toxic substances known. In one extensive clinical trial, a high dose of 75 milligrams of melatonin per day was given to 1400 women in the Netherlands for up to four years with no ill effects.
