Easy Steps to Better Grades
Article by Andre Thunestvedt
If you were a swimmer, you’d know that success takes more than swimming. You would also need to train in things that have nothing to do with swimming. You’d need to work out in the gym, maybe do some running, and generally get your body in shape. Only when you get in overall shape will you succeed in swimming.
It’s the same way with your brain and getting good grades. Some of the best ways to get better grades have nothing to do with memorization. If you work out your brain often, it’ll work better in general. That way your memory skills will help you get good grades. If you don’t work out your brain, your memory skills will get rusty. And there go your grades!
So here’s a three-part program for beefing up your brain:
Play with Puzzles. Playing with puzzles is fun. While you play, your brain is getting in shape. Puzzles help shape up your memory, in particular. Games like Sudoku or Scrabble help your brain keep sharp and alert. When your brain’s in good shape, your memory goes along for the ride.
Why not have fun while you’re getting smarter!
Read, Read, Read! During the week, you’re reading those text books all day long. So who needs to read another book? But reading a book for fun is different. And just like the puzzles, while you have fun reading, your brain beefs up. So pull yourself away from the computer games and the TV, and find a book that looks like a good read. Ask your librarian for some help if you need it. Reading will broaden your mental skills and you’ll get better grades.
Exercise your whole body—for your brain. You get two for the price of one when you exercise your whole body. Your brain benefits too. Sure, you may protest, how does playing soccer help my brain? It turns out that during exercise, the brain releases two “feel-good” chemicals, dopamine, and serotonin. And yes, research shows that these chemicals boost memory, increase mental alertness, and improve your ability to recall. So, if you’ve got a big exam in a couple of days, take some time off and run a few miles or set up a soccer game with your friends.
Memory improvement can actually be fun. Play with puzzles, read a book, or exercise your body. They all help you improve your memory and get getter grades, without actual memory training.
